I would like to state that I believe all martial arts, boxing, and grappling, are fantastic. I have been training in the martial arts for over thirty years. It truly is one of the most important aspects of my life. So as you read my statement and the concepts that I present, I wish to show no disrespect to any martial art styles or instructors. I welcome your comments and ideas, as it will only help the both of us become better at what we do. When it comes to hand to hand violence, the goal is to survive without injuring the assailant, and if possible to prevent legal consequences! DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO AVOID A CONFRONTATION! However, if violence is ABSOLUTELY necessary, be as effective and devastating as possible. Most importantly, the SSS mindset is that there is always the possibility of knives, firearms and multiple attackers. SSS will dispel the misconceptions that are being taught today. If you consider yourself an effective street fighter, ask yourself this question: Do you believe that you can get any joint lock or joint manipulation on a big man who is throwing punches trying to beat you to a pulp? Drugged out, crazy people do not care about pain! They want something from you, AND THEY WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET IT! SSS will show the reality of joint manipulations and the misconceptions that so many instructors teach. How is it possible to defend against multiple attackers if you commit two hands to apply a joint lock? The answer, YOU CAN'T In the ring or in your training hall you know what you are up against, which is usually one fighter and no weapons. Practice those joint locks, I think it is a great skill to have, but in the street you must never have the mindset of fighting one unarmed attacker. FOR EFFECTIVE AND REALISTIC STREET SURVIVAL SKILLS YOU MUST BE PREPARED FOR ARMED MULTIPLE ATTACKERS AT ALL TIMES! Ask yourself, how can you protect your partner, wife or loved ones with a joint lock when there are two attackers? One is attacking you, the other your wife or family. If you don't have the multiple armed assailant mindset, the chance of becoming another crime statistic will greatly increase. Do you believe pressure point attacks are effective when you have a drugged out, desperate assailant, or multiple attackers with only one goal in mind which is to rob, maim, or kill you? The fact is you will be lucky to have one second to respond. Do you believe pressure points are a viable defense when attempted on a person that is throwing punches or slamming you against a wall and has friends that are waiting to jump in and join the fun? Pressure points are great for practicing hand accuracy, but an attacker is not going to stand there and let you use them as shown in articles and videos. What you need to do is have one of your big, strong, fast students come at you full speed without telling you what he is going to do. Let him punch, grab, use throws, kick, and come at you with a club, knife, or whatever he wants to do. Be honest, and let me know what happens. Effective pressure points in this kind of street situation are extremely unlikely. Power, strength, body fat and clothing, drugs and alcohol all have a negative effect on pressure points. Split Second Survival dispels the myths of pressure point fighting while teaching the concepts of street survival that will keep you alive. Do you believe in the concept of grappling as a viable asset in street survival? Think of yourself rolling around on the ground with a two hundred pound construction worker who is nothing but strength and power. You may be thinking right now, I have trained for years. I am big, strong and fast; I can handle it. What if he is sweaty, or is wearing suntan oil. What if you are wearing a suit, boots, tight jeans, or a heavy jacket? Are you in the snow, on the beach, in a bar where there is no room? MOST IMPORTANTLY, how do you know you are fighting only one person, and that he is not carrying a blade? Simply, you don't! How can you defend against more than one attacker if you focus on taking a person to the ground? YOU CAN'T! If you are thrown to the ground, your only goal is to injure and confuse your attacker while getting to your feet as quickly as possible. SSS shows you ways that you have never seen before. Are you taught sweeps and throws as effective techniques? Big people can throw down small people, but the chance of a smaller man sweeping or throwing a large man is very limited. Space and proper attire is required and attempting these moves leaves you open for weapon and multiple attacks. As I have already stated, you must have one of your students come at you full speed, with every technique he has and let me know what happens. Big people throw little people, as big strong people have no respect for smaller people. Smaller people don't throw or sweep big people. You must be flexible and skilled, have the proper clothing, and the right surface to stand on before executing these techniques is even possible. What most likely will happen, is as you attempt to sweep a big person, you will find yourself stopped dead because of his weight and strength, you will loose you balance, and he will reach down and introduce himself with his fist. This is not Hollywood! Remember we are not talking about the ring or your studio, we are talking about the street, where there is little warning. There is just pain, weapons, and possibly death. Are you taught that punches, kicks, and elbows are effective? Can you kick with boots on? Could you kick effectively in the sand, snow, ice, or on a slippery floor? Can you punch effectively with gloves on? Can you use elbow strikes with a jacket, or while wearing a backpack? You must have the ability to defend yourself at all times and in any situation. Punch or kick a 200 hundred pound man in the face as hard as you can. Let me know how it turns out! Those who teach punches and kicks as effective techniques are not dealing realistically with a street survival situation. They have no concept of how difficult it is to have the power to stop an attacker using only combinations of kicks and punches. Even at that, what would you do when you see a knife or firearm because this man knows he cannot beat you hand-to-hand? Pick up any magazine or video, you will notice that the instructor is the same size or larger than the attacker. Trust me, when there are drugs or alcohol involved, punches, kicks and elbows are very, very, difficult to use effectively, and on multiple attackers, they can be useless. When it comes to hand to hand survival, an attacker, especially a big man, will not play around. He will be on you in a second! He has no respect for you, or your fighting skills. SSS will show you myths that are taught and will show you techniques and concepts that will make you an effective street survivor. Are you taught muscle memory techniques? If you are, you belong in the ring not the streets! Muscle memory means that you are training for techniques to be applied in a specific angle, or exact way. Muscle memory is great for Katas and forms practiced in the martial arts. Each move must be precise and accurate to represent each particular art. I practice forms everyday to improve my martial art skills. I think it is great, keep on training! However, you cannot, and must not train a muscle memory theory for the street as it is impossible to know what may happen. Imagine that three men put knives to your throat. You must respond with no thought, just reaction. Two men have attacked you; one has you around the throat and is choking you, and the other has you by the shirt, you cannot prepare for each and every attack, but you must respond instantly and use the level of violence necessary. SSS will show concepts and techniques that you have never seen before. Split Second Survival is not a martial art or style. It is not for those who wish to improve their tournament skills. It is not for any ring training. There are no specific names for moves or techniques. It is a concept that removes the use force against force, without using kicks, blocks, punches, elbows, locks, pressure points or throws. The SSS concept of always being prepared for the possibility of armed multiple attackers is a must. The four levels of defense used allow you to choose to inflict no pain, slight injury, severe injury or death. The concept of using simple effective weapons when possible is one that may keep you and your family alive, and most importantly to AVOID CONFLICT IF POSSIBLE! Remain calm, apologize, and give your assailant anything he wants. Never give him a reason to injure you or your family, but when it is time to defend yourself, it must be done within one second, taking it to the level necessary to protect yourself, your partner, and the ones you love. There are no guarantees when it comes to street violence! To anyone who says there is, please, have him contact me so I can become his best student. As I have already stated, whatever martial art you train in, or whatever you do to improve your self-defense abilities, please continue to do so. In making the SSS series our only goal was to make it as realistic as possible, dispel the myths that are taught, and to make a series that will make it possible to survive the most violent crimes and assaults imaginable. |
